“In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person’s becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American…There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn’t an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag… We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language… and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.”-Theodore Roosevelt 1907
I love this quote by Teddy. It kind of sums up my view on the immigration debate.
I was born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona. A city smack in the middle of this debate. I remember speaking at a public school in West Phoenix about citizenship back in 2001. Citizenship was the last value in the six part character series we taught in public schools. The six parts were trustworthiness, respect, responsibility fairness, caring, and citizenship. Basic character values to help young people be productive members of society. During the citezenship talk however teachers at a predominantly hispanic school become irate with us because we talked about our duty as American citizens. (i.e. paying taxes, voting, not littering etc.) They blasted my self and my co-orators for being so racist toward Mexicans in saying the word American. “American citizens!?” one teacher quipped, “How dare you call us Americans, we are Mexicans! not Americans!” This statement baffled me. I asked her if she was a legal citizen of this nation and she said yes, but she lives under only one flag and that is the flag of “Mehico”.
Now let me be clear. I don’t subscribe to a very conservative, or patriotic idea of America. Nor am I a member of a political party. I’m a citizen of Heaven first, then America. I first serve the King of the ages, then the government I’m under. I want to say that so you know that I have no agenda politically. I’m not left, not right, not neutural. I’m a member of the theocratic kingdom of heaven, may the Lord’s will be done. Therefore I bring you this debate because I simply want to hear some different views as this subject is such a conundrum.
I think, like Teddy did, If someone wants to become a productive member of the American society, and obey the laws and duties that come with that, then bring um on in, no matter the number. However Mexican citizens wanting to come here to work, and send money home to Mexico should not become citizens of America. You can’t have millions of people acting like members of one country while pledging allegiance, and support to another country. (By the way in most societies thats defined as treason punishable by death… which I’m not suggesting at all) To have a working government, and a habitable, successful society, you can’t have people claiming citizenship in your country if they consider they allegiance somewhere else. It’s just not practical. Nor is it good leadership of a nation. It leads to instability.
On the other hand I feel for Mexican citizens wanting to flee poverty, and find a life outside their oppressive government. I think work visas should be allowed for those people, however only for 6 months to a year at a time. At which time the opportunity is given to become a citizen, if they renounce the country they came from.
In the kingdom of Heaven no man can serve God and the World. That’s a governmental principle set in place by Jesus himself. I think you can translate the same government principle to immigration. Either serve one country and renounce the other, or you serve the other country and renounce this one. But you can’t serve both… just doesn’t work.
thoughts? Am I wrong? Am I right? Am I daft? I want to know! It’s controversy Monday so bring the heat.
What's being said by you...
