Oh Pat!! what the Pat!!!

I’ve delayed in posting this for reasons of not wanting to turn my blog into a political debate, but the questions surrounding Pat Robertson endorsing Rudy Giuliani are to large. Is Pat Robertson getting senile? Has he forgotten that his career isĀ  built on the platform of speaking out against abortion and same sex marriage? By endorsing Rudy Giuliani who publicly, unappologetically endorses gay marriage, and abortion, I’m very concerned.

I will say this, I HATE abortion! For 3 reasons:

1. It’s murder

2. It endorses a lifestyle of convenience in our morality that is utterly disastrous.

3. Because I can’t vote for guys who legitimately help out in all the other areas we need help. i.e. economy, health care, foreign policy etc.. I have to vote based on one simple stipulation; pro life or pro choice. That is something I will never stop doing because it’s just that important. However it doesn’t mean I’m happy with the overall job that person does in office? Absolutely not! Honestly if it wern’t for our differences on gay marriage and abortion I’d vote for Obama. But that is out of the question while he is pro both of those issues.

Know I’ve never been a big fan of Pat’s political stands, or theological views on things for that matter, but have tolerated them because we share in the grace of Christ. I do not want to attack Pat. In love I want to believe all things, but this is disconcerting. Because of point #3 I can sympathize with Pat. If he is making his endorsement on the basis of overall qualification for the job, than yes I agree, kinda. But that doesn’t change the fact that he is committing a monumental hypocritical act that may have just lost him his career and reputation. I feel sorry for Pat and I hope the best for him. However I fear the repercussions for him within his circle will be dire. Pat has spent his life going hardcore after abortion and gay marriage, in fact it’s one of his staple messages. To go against it in such a dramatic way is quite eerie.

Only Pat knows what swayed him. I’m not even as shocked that he’s backing Rudy. I’m more shocked that he has always been so adamantly opposed to the things Rudy stands for.

For instance:

After Sept. 11 Pat said: These attacks occurred because Americans had insulted God and lost the protection of heaven by allowing abortion and “rampant Internet pornography.”

Time after time Pat has been one of the first ones to vocalize that something needed to be done in Washington to end abortion, or our nation faces eminent judgment from heaven. I’m concerned at how fast he flipped. I’m not even sure the “filp-floper” himself John Kerry flipped on issues quite this quick.

Al I’m saying is I’m concerned. You know something fishy is going on when you suddenly see Pat and Rudy shaking on an election podium…

“I have two things to say:

As far as what he was thinking, he did offer an explanation. Guiliani assured him that he would nominate conservative judges who would presumably vote to overturn Roe v. Wade (actually the relevant legal standard today is Planned Parenthood v. Casey).

Practically, it really doesnt matter what the President thinks about abortion, because, ultimately, and maybe unfortunantly, the power lies in the hands of the judiciary with respect to this issue.

In this case it almost seems self-defeating to take a hard line against Guiliani simply because of his views on this issue. As it were, one would miss the forest for the trees. A Guiliani presidency would at least result in the appointment of conservative judges, whereas, for example, if Hillary were to win, it would be certain that she would appoint liberal judges. This is a real issue it this point given the ages of some of the current justices.
