Oprah denouces Jesus?

16 04 2008

So what?! How is this news? Was she ever FOR Jesus? I’m pretty sure she has always had that stance. I remember like 10-15 years ago she said the she reads the Bible every day because of it’s high moral standard, but never held to a specific religion.

Second point: Who cares?! Oprah is a talk show host. I’m pretty sure Tyra Banks, Jerry Springer denounce Jesus too. On Facebook they actually started a “cause” group called: Oprah denounces Jesus- get the word out.

This type of thing bothers me because people put way to much stock into celebrities.  I remember when Oprah endorsed Obama, pundits were saying how her endorsement greatly changes his chances. Really?? She is a talk show host. Sure she pulls the heart strings at times, and is an very good, probably the best talk show host we’ve seen. But what makes her a viable spokesman for our society so much so, that it effects who Americans vote for, and makes them care whether or not she believes in Jesus?

She doesn’t, and never has. I pray that she does. I pray that she is compelled to Christ. But even then I wouldn’t look to her as an authority on the subject. Not without seeing the fruit of it in her life.

Ok I’m done ranting. It just bothers me when people put so much stock into celebrities. because whether they realize it or not… it’s worship and idolatry.

my thoughts. oh and good morning.

Zack,

I totally understand your post. I think the part that bothers me is that because she is a celebrity, she is also drawing some of the faith away from the faith. I have co-worker who stated to me in the past that she was saved in a 4Square church. Believed in Jesus but then just the other day she stated that she was so excited about what Oprah was doing and that she had been reading Elkhart Tolles book and saw so much of Jesus in it.

I confronted her about that and I hope and pray that it made her think about what she is following, but my point is Oprah is leading others from even accepting the true way to salvation and some who have made that decision to follow Jesus away from the faith.

So when you say, “so what?” I think there is room for concern.

Tim totally agree. It goes back to a post I wrote last summer called “morality isn’t Christianity”. I think many in the faith confuse people like Bono, and Oprah as being heroes in the faith because of their strong philanthropy, and charity to the poor as a life in Christ. When instead they are souls doing good things in vain. I think it’s actually a bigger waste when unsaved people spend so much time trying to do “good”. It’s actually an arrogance in the face of God. As if to say that they don’t need the righteousness of Christ to do good things.

I think its also the mistake history makes about the founding fathers. Their high moral standards don’t change the fact that they weren’t all (some like Adams were) Christian. But morality in our nation is described as Christian, this is the primary problem.

If it’s not faith in Christ and his righteousness or “morality” then it’s vanity.

Mornin’ Zack.

I am with you on this. What shifting sand, men’s morality is. they have said that O is America’s pastor. What a totally scary thought that is. It’s sophistry and a total set up for A/C type of all inclusive religious system. to put your weight on peoples moraility over faith in Christ alone that has visible fruit of that confession. What a dangerous mindset!!

Good points Z.

My faith is built on Nothing less
than Jesus Christ and His righteousness
All other gorund is sinking sand
all other ground is sinking sand…..

What else scares me about all this, is that Oprah is titled “America’s pastor” I think mostly as a response to the lack of REAL pastors in the church.

Most pastors, at least in the evangelical world that I’ve witnessed, are lectern’s and inspirer-ers but very few do you find actually shepherding the hearts of men and women. We desperately need real pastors in the church that are not in ministry for the sake of seeing their calling played out or ministry grow, but who are in ministry for the sake of helping people walk out their lives according to the word in Christ Jesus. We need pastors who have hearts grounded in the word, and love for those they shepherd. Because of the lack people are turning to the Oprah’s and Dr. Phil’s of the world.

outside of Christ, it is indeed sinking sand

The biggest problem with this and why it is a concern to me is that she has over 2 million people signed up for this “study” and she is confusing so many. Another concern is that she calls herself a Christian but denounces Jesus Christ as the one and only way to heaven. If you are a Christian then you are a follower of Christ. If you are not a follower, then you cannot call yourself a Christian. Nuff said.
