The Joys of Betrothal

So in the study of the Kingdom of God there is a phrase often used to describe God’s Kingdom, one that is my view:
“Already, but not Yet.”
In one sense you are incredibly excited that you are in love and have found the person you will spend the rest of your life with. Then on the other hand, you have to manage the tension that it hasn’t fully been completed. This creates a strange social tension where my existence has been reduced to 3 simple questions:

1. “When is the wedding date again?”

2. “How are the plans coming?”

3. “Are you excited?”

See I’m no longer Zack, I’m almost married Zack. So there is no query as to what I’m up to or how I am feeling. Just those three questions. To the third I like to mix it up and tell people I’m not excited. Just to be funny. Because let’s face it, it’s one of those silly questions you I and all of us ask. Of course I’m excited. How could I be anything less. The asker would be absolutely shocked if I replied with anything less.

This has actually made for a fun game between Carrie and I. When people come up to us we just automatically answer those 3 questions. The person is usually stunned. They ask: “How did you know what I was going to ask?” to which we reply, “Just guessed!”

All in all betrothal is wonderful! I love that I get this time to enjoy and learn many different things about the woman I will share my life with. So if you see us in public, mix it up. Ask us about President Franklin Pierce’s foreign policy or something. Then sneak the above three questions in!

This made me laugh so hard… if anything simply for the fact that is is pure truth! I wonder what drives us to ask those “automatic questions” that just come out without us even thinking… I find myself doing it also. If I see you before you and Carrie are married, I promise to only talk about the weather. That’s all. :)
