Life is Punishment?

I stole the following photo from JimB’s blog. The quote comes from Obama’s talk to Planned Parenthood a year ago. Obama thanked Planned Parenthood for the “invaluable work” that they do to help young women be saved from unwanted pregnancy.

Let’s talk about how absurd this type of thinking is for a second. Under the logic used by Obama, there should also be an organization that saves women from making bad choices for husbands. They could call it “Planned Matrimony”, if you don’t like your husband they’ll show up in the night and shoot him in the head with a shot gun and take him away.

Under this same logic we should have an organization called Planned Neighborhoods. For those of us that think the poor are a drain on the economy, we could have swat teams armed guards infiltrate poor and ugly parts of cities, and put to death anyone who lives on the street, or is on welfare using our tax dollars to live. That would be much more convenient.

Am I blowing this out of proportion? “Zack why are you getting so bent out of shape about a political issue, leave political issues alone!” Let me state this clear: Abortion IS NOT a political issue! It’s a life, a life ordained by the God who is living and sovereign. Abortion is murder. Those of us who can act to stop it, will answer before the throne in Heaven if we do not. It’s not a liberal vs. conservative thing; it’s life or death.

P.S.:

John McCain isn’t off the hook either. He may be the republican candidate, but that does mean anything. He also needs to understand the gravity of abortion. Because right now it’s not on hi radar the way it should be.

  • The sadisdic irony of the statement that Sen. Obama made was, that if he didn’t want his wife punished for an unplanned pregnancy, the daughters he loves wouldn’t be. How can they miss that??

I was thinking about doing a post on abortion the other day, and after seeing yours, I think I will. We cannot be silent.

  • [...] at the International House of Prayer here in Kansas City, wrote a very insightful post on Life is Punishment? that is well worth the read. Go on over and check it out, and leave a comment if you found it [...]

  • Great post! It isn’t a liberal vs. conservative, republican vs. democrat thing. This is a human life we are talking about here. Thanks for trumpeting this.

  • That is so true, Zack. Reading your post makes me burn inside. At school I am surrounded by people and books that promote death and blame Christians for the bad in the world. Despite what people say, abortion isn’t about when a baby becomes a real baby because, like you said, the same philosophies spill over to every human (no matter how big or small) who isn’t good enough.

  • I don’t know how any parent can be pro-choice. I just really don’t. There is always adoption, and there are numerous amounts of people who would be more than happy to take a baby off of a young woman’s hands.

I was pro-choice until I had my daughter. I can’t imagine throwing away something so beautiful.

  • So what in your opinion is the answer? I mean really? Unless every Christian would get off their duffs and make enough noise the world will have it’s way in this issue. We pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and pray and then some more and still I don’t see any real answer to this. On top of that even in the “Christian” camp (notice the quote marks) there are those who are pro-choice. We can’t even be 100% united in this matter.

We have to be louder than the others and I just don’t see it happening. Lack of faith on my part? Not at all! God can turn this around in a moments notice, a blink of an eye, but He hasn’t and why do you suppose that is?

These are genuine questions that I have…

  • My honest answer? Well before I say this let me state so there is no confusion: God is sovereign, “Whatever He Pleases He does”

With that known, In looking at the Biblical history the reason God doesn’t react to injustice such as this seems to be 2 reasons:

    1. He is waiting for the number of people praying to grow, so that when He acts The faith of more is stirred and His glory increases.

    2. Because He is judging a nation for disobedience.

However that said I wouldn’t say Nothing is happening. We got 2 pro life supreme court judges in the last 2 years. There are 200,000 teens and young adults gathering on the mall in Washington D.C. in 3 weeks for the Call, to fast and pray and demand abortion be ended. 200,000! And numbers are growing by the day. Whether you like IHOP, Lou Engle or not, (which obviously since I’m helping with the Call and am in leadership at IHOP I do) That is a pretty great sign. If not that4 different court cases have been opened in the last 5 months. Some states have banned abortion, and others like Colorado may follow.

God is moving in this area.

But what is it that Job says? “The Lord gives and takes away, in all, my heart will choose to say, blessed be your name”

  • Oh and check out my friends new flim that IHOP is helping put out. It has already gotten academy attention:

Oh and Carlie! I totally agree! glad to see you found me!

  • Zack,
Keep up the good work. It is sad just how silent the church is on abortion. Your posts on this topic have spurred me on to taking more action and getting more vocal. I have posted on it at http://www.TransformedDaily.com, but I am also approaching people with the challenge that they will be judged for the vote they cast in November. Voting for a candidate who we know is pro-abortion is a vote in favor of the heinous act of abortion. It is really that simple.

  • I think, to add to all of this, that the church needs to envision an adoption initiative. If we stop killing babies by the hundreds of thousands, only to sit back and watch them languish in the foster system or get placed in same-sex parent homes, have we really answered God’s heart cry?

The reality is that just as the abortion scourge flows from a culture-of-convenience, the apathy towards adoption flows from our culture-of-comfort.

  • I wonder what would happen if the church raised the money (it would take billions) and made the commitment to take and raise every unwanted baby. Not only would it change the debate about abortion (we would be putting our money and our lives where our mouth is) it would also create a whole generation raised in Christian homes.

  • Bret and Eli, I think you nailed it. I think that is what has to happen. I have been helping a number of different couples raise funds in order to adopt un-wanted babies, and I want to see that initiative grow.

That would indeed be a message for the Prosperity gospel preachers who are pro life. If the prosperity we receive is from the Lord, then it should be used not to make us rich but to preach the gospel with the giving of our finances. The love of Christ should not just be seen in the faces of believers but in the actions.

I’m uncertain what a call to this would look like, but I agree that it must be a priority.

  • Zack – I saw this disturbing post on wordpress today, and if you haven’t seen it yet, I think you should. http://defendingcontending.com/2008/07/27/god-will-never-ever-bless-this/ Please share with your readers!!

  • Yes that is a link people should see… Though it made me physically sick. I’m not into sensationalizing this debate with graphic images. But the truth needs to be felt that abortion clinics are throwing away fetuses, that are almost developed.

It’s a grave ordeal that has nothing to do with woman’s rights, but the rights of children that are being revoked. The right to live.

  • That blog was disturbing. One of our B4L teams (from Detroit IHOPE) covers the Eastpoint clinic that they talked about. Please pray that we can continue mobilizing teams to cover all of them around the city of Detroit and the state of Michigan. This has to stop.

I watched that trailer for that movie and I balled, when at the end of it, the woman was crying and saying “I’m sorry baby….” All I could think about is my baby, and the realization the mother has after they have gone through with the henious thing. It just came so real to me. My heart was moved for the pain and torment that is left on these womans soul’s after having believed this lie. Nothing good comes of it; not for the mother, and certianly not for the baby.
